Varenicline Versus Nicotine Replacement for Methadone-Maintained Smokers

This project was conducted in a methadone clinic setting and compared two forms of pharmacotherapy: combination nicotine-replacement-therapy versus non- nicotine-replacement therapy with varenicline tartrate (commonly known as Chantix or Champix). With close to one million methadone treatment entries per year in the United States, this research can have a meaningful public health impact addressing a high-risk population that would otherwise be difficult to reach.

The Principal Investigator for this study was Dr. Michael Stein at Brown University; Dr. Raymond Niaura was the primary SI/Legacy collaborator.
