The goals of this project are to develop a partnership between two existing successful initiatives: the Million Hearts Initiative at the MedStar Health system in the metro Washington, DC area, and the BecomeAnEX.org suite of digital smoking cessation programs at the American Legacy Foundation. This project also aims to advance physician training across MedStar Health clinics in assessment, brief advice, and referral to evidence-based smoking cessation.

Millions of smokers use the Internet for help quitting smoking each year. A growing number of studies have shown that Internet programs do, indeed, help people to quit successfully. However, most smokers visit quit smoking websites only one or two times and do not use many of the tools that can help them quit for good. This study is testing the effectiveness of two different strategies designed to increase the “dose” of treatment that smokers get from an Internet quit smoking program.
