Some of the research studies are local and you will need to be in the District of Columbia, Virginia, or Maryland area and also be willing to travel to the main headquarters in Washington, DC. For other research studies, you are eligible to enroll from the area or state in which you reside.

Each of the Active Studies listed here provide details about geographic requirements.

Some of the research studies do require you to have access to the Internet. Check the research study for additional details and information.

Some studies do require that you have a cellular device to be eligible for the research study. Check the research study for additional details and information.

Past Research studies are closed to new participants. However, under the “Join a Study” tab, there are a variety of studies open for participation. The red “Enroll now” button indicates the study is currently recruiting participants.

You can enter your email address at the bottom of the homepage to be notified about new studies as they become available.

Any icon that says “Local” means you must be in the area (Washington, DC, Maryland, or Virginia) and be willing to travel to the Schroeder Institute to complete the study. Icons that say “National” mean you can participate in the study from anywhere in the U.S.

The NRT icon stands for Nicotine Replacement Therapy, which means that the study involves the use of nicotine replacement therapy.  There are 5 approved forms of nicotine replacement therapies: nicotine patch, nicotine gum, nicotine lozenge, nicotine inhaler, and the nicotine spray. The patch, gum and lozenge products are available over the counter; the inhaler and spray require a prescription. Studies that involve NRT are most likely to provide patch, gum, or lozenge.

A “male” icon means that a study is currently trying to recruit men. It does not necessarily mean women cannot enroll in the study; however, it could mean the study has enrolled enough women and are inviting more men to participate in the study. Check the individual study details to learn more about who is eligible to participate.

The icons with the purple dots signify the degree of time commitment the study requires. Some studies have one purple dot indicating the degree of time commitment is low. This might include replying to a text message or taking a short survey online. For studies that show four purple dots, it means the time commitment is high. This might include traveling to Schroeder Institute in Washington, DC and interacting with researchers on a regular basis.

The Schroeder Institute is located at 900 G Street NW, Fourth Floor, Washington, DC 20001. We are across the street from the Gallery Place/Chinatown metro station (red, green, and yellow lines) using the G Street exit.
